The engineer for the Russia, the train that travels the entire Trans-Siberian Railroad route, watches for a signal from a  railroad yard worker as he attaches the engine to the 12-car  train.   • [NSS_18 Window]  Caption: Alexandre Pirangalaev, 15, is a novice monk at the  Buddhist datsan--temple--in Ivolginsk. He and three other novices  live in this small house without indoor plumbing. They study  Tibetan Buddhism for several years and then return to their  villages to spread their faith. It is a great honor for the young men to be chosen to study at the datsan. This woman  hawks her wares from the window of the Valdivostok-Ulan Bator  train while on a 15 minute stop at the town of Slyudyanka on the  shore of Lake Baikal. The items are purchased cheaply at the  Pacific seaport of Vladivostok, are carried on the train and then  sold either en route in Siberia or Mongolia.   • Ramil Ilyasov gets a haircut from fellow Islamic student  Renat Schkalikov. They live and study in the Muhammadan Center in  Kazan, the capital of Tatarstan. The Center was used by Muslim  scholars before the Stalinist crackdown and it has been a fight  to regain the property from the non-Muslim businessmen that  operated, and still operate, businesses on the property. Said  Schkalikov on his decision to study Islam, 'I was serving in the Russian Army when I realized I wanted to study Islam. It was  after we captured seven Afghan fighters along the border. I was  very impressed by the purity of their souls and the way they prayed five times a day.'  Photographer: William Snyder

  • [NSS_18Burial]  Caption: 80 year old Muslim Atgam Gatanlin is laid to rest in the  cemetary in Kazan. As is Musliam tradition, Gatanlin was buried  the day after he died. Death in the Muslim religion is not viewed  as a bad thing since you are going to another world. Gatanlin was fortunate to have died on Friday, the holiest day of the week.   • Babushkas line the railroad platforms at every stop  along the Trans-Siberian Railroad peddling everything from fresh bread to Korean noodles to vodka. These entrepreneurs make  traveling the 6224 mile trip from Moscow to Vladivostock easier and more comfortable since the trains are not well-stocked with  food or drink.   • At each stop along the entire 6224 miles of the Tans- Siberian Railroad, local entrepreneurs line the station platforms  and sell food to the passengers. Bread, cheese, fresh smoked fish,  milk, potato dumplings and cooked meats are amoung the items  available for the intrepid travler who find the restaurant car  fare to be inadequate.   • Although the trains themsleves are not well-stocked, it  is easy for travelers on the Trans-Siberian Railroad to find  fresh fruit, vegetables, smoked fished, meat and commodities of  all kinds readily available from the kiosks and bahbushkas that line every station along the 6224 mile route.
